London 2012 Cultural Olympiad
The four-year London 2012 Cultural Olympiad started in September 2008 and is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games, designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012.
At the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad are the Major Projects, which encompass a wide range of cultural activities including art, music and theatre. These programmes are supported by The London Organising Committee along with Government, the Mayor of London and a network of partner organisations such as the Arts Councils, BBC, Museums; Libraries and Archives, Regional Development Agencies and national and regional arts organisations.
As the host city, London is a focal point for many of these celebrations, which will culminate in 2012. London is already world renowned for its creative landscape however the Cultural Olympiad will ensure that the city optimises its cultural focus before and during the Games.
There are opportunities for businesses in the creative sector to get involved in the Cultural Olympiad through both existing and new projects. All Cultural Olympiad projects must be in line with London 2012’s values and themes. Further details about some of the key events and initiatives are explained below.
Businesses wanting more information about becoming part of the Cultural Olympiad should contact their London 2012 Creative Programmer, who can offer further information on applications as well as work with project organisers to further develop initial ideas.
However, organisations are reminded that, with exception to the few Major Projects that are commission-based, the Cultural Olympiad and LOCOG are not funding bodies and applications for projects must come with outside funding already in place to be considered.
